Fire Claims Consecutive Titles

Saturday, September 14, 2013

The Queensland Fire has won back-to-back 18’s Girls National Youth Championships titles, defeating New South Wales Combined High Schools 8-5 in the final.

The strong rivalry between the two school-based teams continued, meeting in the final for the fourth consecutive year.

After losing in both 2010 and 2011, Queensland made it two titles in a row with their three touchdown win over CHS.

NSWCHS was the first team on the scoreboard, with Shannon Rose dashing down the wing to give her side an early lead after eight minutes of play.

Rebecca Mi Mi got Queensland on the scoreboard not long after the midway mark of the half, with Tamika Upton setting her up to level the game at 1-all.

Upton was in the thick of things not long after when a great long ball saw Maddison Black score and when the Fire scored again just before half-time they took a handy 3-1 lead into the break.

Co-captain Kimberley Sue See extended her side’s lead shortly after the break, diving over to give her side a 4-1 lead.

Kate Dreyer closed the gap for New South Wales to two touchdowns with her diving skills and when Nakia Davis-Welsh impressed with her footwork and scored soon after, they were back in the game at 4-3.

Queensland pushed their lead out to three touchdowns by the midway mark of the second half and kept that advantage at the final siren, taking a three touchdown win.

Upton was named Player of the Final, while Sue See was named Player of the Series.
